Mark T. Swihart earned a B.S. from Rice University in 1992, and aPh.D. 1997 from the University of Minnesota, both in Chemical Engineering, thenspent one year as a post-doctoral researcher Mechanical Engineering at theUniversity of Minnesota. Professor Swihart joined the faculty of the departmentof Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) in1998, has been a full professor since 2008, and was named a UB DistinguishedProfessor in 2014. From 2007 to 2015 he directed the UB2020 strategic initiativein Integrated Nanostructured Systems. He currently serves as Executive Directorof the NYS Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics. His researchinterests include synthesis, processing, and applications of nanoparticles andother nanomaterials, with particular emphases on gas-phase synthesis ofnanoparticles and on the computational modeling of nanomaterials processing. Hehas co-authored approximately 170 peer-reviewed journal papers, which have beencited more than 8000 times. Swihart has received the Kenneth Whitby award fromthe American Association for Aerosol Research, the Schoellkopf medal from theAmerican Chemical Society, and the J.B. Wagner award from the ElectrochemicalSociety, along with university awards for research, teaching, and mentoring ofundergraduate researchers, including being named “Professor of the Year” by thechemical engineering undergraduates 5 times. Swihart currently serves as aneditor for Aerosol Science and Technology, and on the Board of ConsultingEditors of AIChE Journal. He has served as research advisor to approximatelyfifty current and former graduate students and more than ninety undergraduateresearchers at UB. He is a fellow of the American Association for theAdvancement of Science (AAAS).
